A JOB BEST LEFT TO A PROFESSIONAL

This job is not for the faint of heart. It requires lots of tools, lots of time and lots of patience. I recently did a Ferrari service to replace the oil and water pumps on a Ferrari FF. Even with all the tools in my shop, some questionable designs and the tight fitment make this job very difficult and technical. Pumps fail though, and you have to replace them. In this instance the failure actually caused water to leak into the starting system and made that fail as well. Hopefully that doesn’t happen in your case.

There are a few issues with this Ferrari Service. For starters, it requires a lot of tools, some that don’t even seem to exist. I had to fabricate a wrench just to get to a couple of the bolts and even then it was a very tedious process. A second problem is the tight fitment. There is so little ability for the pump to move, you actually have to slide it across the block face it mates to. This has to be done with the seals already in place which poses two more issues.

One, the seals can dislodge from their settings and are very difficult to reseat without pulling the whole unit out. And two, the seals have to slide across the face of the block. If they get pressed against any edge, they can dent or tear which will result in a leak. You can use some thick silicone compatible grease to both help keep them seated and also help them slide without getting ruined, but you still have to be extremely careful.

*Bonus Issue* – Something very interesting I noticed about the ports on the block, they are supposed to be beveled all the way around. However, each one had a portion where the bevel had been eroded away. Over time, the oil and water passing around the tight bend had worn away the bevel and polished the metal into a very sharp edge. These edges need to be sanded back to a bevel or else they will slice right through your seals.
